Divergent Discussion Questions

Will you be joining us this Wednesday the 28th from 6-7:30 in the Children's Program Room for our YA Book Club? If so, here are some of the questions that we will be discussing:

  • Do you feel that you could fit well into one faction, or like Tris, do you feel that you are too complex to fit into only one?
  • What are the complications of a world where only one faction holds all governmental power?
  • What do you think about the world in which Divergent is set? What aspects seem real to you and what seems fake?
  • What do you think the purpose of the fence surrounding the city is?
  • The factions are all kept very separate in the book. How does this affect the way that each faction thinks of all the others? What about the fact that the members of each faction have to wear a specific kind of clothing?
We hope to see you there to discuss these questions and more! Snacks provided!

The Lock Artist by Steve Hamilton

Michael was so traumatized by a dramatic family incident when he was only 8 years old that he stopped speaking, and years later, he still hasn't started again. He has, however, discovered that he has an ability to pick locks...door locks, combination locks, tumbler locks, padlocks, and eventually, the locks on extremely expensive safes. As people start discovering his talent, they begin to use him for their own personal gain, and Michael is forced into a life of crime.

Michael tells the story of his life while serving a prison sentence for his final and biggest crime, waiting for the day when he is released and he can reconnect with the only person he has ever loved... and maybe, just maybe, speak again.

Our Pick of the Week!

When Parents Text: So Much Said...So Little Understood by Lauren Kaelin and Sophia Fraioli

When Parents Text is one of our favorite new books at the library! The authors, Lauren and Sophia, are two recent college grads who couldn't stop laughing at how ridiculous some of their parents' text messages are. They decided to create a website so that they could share their parents' text messages with the world, and have other young people send in their own text conversations with their parents. Now they have turned the website into a book which features the funniest, strangest text convo's between parents and their kids, filled with bad jokes, crazy emoticons, and seemingly nonsensical messages sent in all caps and complete with forty exclamation points. Will parents ever learn the lingo? Probably not...
